What is an Environment, Occupational Health, Industrial Safety, Sustainability & Energy Audits ?

An Environment, Occupational Health, Industrial Safety, Sustainability & Energy Audits is a comprehensive review and evaluation of your company’s practices, procedures, and operations in the areas of environmental impact, workplace safety, and health compliance. The goal of an Environment, Occupational Health, Industrial Safety, Sustainability & Energy Audits is to identify potential risks, non-compliance issues, and inefficiencies, while also recommending improvements to help your organization align with best practices, regulatory requirements, and sustainability goals.

An Environment, Occupational Health, Industrial Safety, Sustainability & Energy Audits typically covers the following:

  1. Environment Audits:Environmental audits are a key part of environmental management. They assess an organization’s performance and compliance with environmental standards to evaluate the potential or actual harm caused to the environment.
  • Environmental compliance audits: Evaluate an organization’s compliance with environmental regulations
  • Environmental management audits: Verify that an organization is meeting its environmental objectives
  • Functional environmental audits: Determine if a company complies with specific regulations for certain tasks, such as waste management
  • Environmental assessment audits: Evaluate the conditions of approval for an environmental report and its effectiveness at predicting impacts
  • Risk assessment audits: Identify and prioritize environmental risks associated with specific activities, processes, or facilities
  • ISO 14001 audits: Evaluate a supplier’s environmental management system
  1. Industrial Safety Audits:An industrial safety audit is a broad term that refers to a procedure in which a facility collects data on one or more workplace components to assess the risk of health or safety concerns. The purpose of safety audits is accountability. Safety audits are intended to guarantee that a company’s physical and human assets are protected by compelling program features for recognizing, reducing, or mitigating hazards. Safety audits are, at their heart, an organized procedure for recording, evaluating, and reporting data on a company’s entire health and safety management system.

Types of Safety Audits: Finally, there are three major types of Safety Audits. Any enterprise that is keen on ensuring the safety of its employees and visitors at the workplace can benefit from the below mentioned safety audits.

  1. Compliance audits:A compliance audit is the simplest and most rudimentary type of safety audit. Compliance audits examine whether your business adheres to the safety standards outlined in its bylaws, processes, rules, regulations, and any associated liabilities. The norms of the country are crucial in establishing these standards.

The compliance audit also examines if the workplace is safe and free of dangers as organizations should make every effort to decrease the number of dangerous acts that could transpire.

A safety auditor will use various programs, rules, training modules, and record-keeping techniques and examine their safety regulations, methods, and practices to see if they comply with OSHA safety requirements and other safety legislation and policies to ensure workplace safety.

Failure to follow the safety rules can result in hefty fines and penalties and a detrimental impact on an organization’s reputation and goodwill. Avoiding penalties is one of the key reasons companies stick to compliance auditing criteria and recheck the various steps.

  1. Program audits:Program audits entail assessing numerous safety measures after thoroughly examining all employee input and each component to identify the program’s good safety outcomes.

Safety program audits are the only way to put EHS to the test by systematically analyzing the program design and efficacy by delving into the rules and foundations of practice.

  1. Management system audits: A management system audit, also known as an overall audit, keeps track of the program and compliance audits. It is the last step in the audit process, and it is used to validate risk control measures and guarantee that safety compliance is sufficient. This audit aims to assess the current performance of the complete safety procedure and determine whether it complies with business policy and regulatory standards. It’s a type of integrated audit that verifies whether the safety initiatives align with the company’s practices and goals. It depicts the audit program in its entirety.

A management system audit combines traditional auditing procedures with employee interviews, compliance assessments, and workplace inspections. It’s a tangled system whose cooperation aids in projecting an overall image of the company’s safety program.

  1. Occupational Health & Safety Audits: An occupational health and safety (OHS) audit is a process that evaluates an organization’s health and safety practices to ensure that employees are working in a safe environment. OHS audits can include:
  • Hazard identification and assessment: Determines if stated rules are being followed
  • Management system audits: Integrates document review, interviews, and workplace observation to assess safety programs.
  • Regulatory compliance audits: Assesses an organization’s adherence to relevant laws, regulations, and standards.
  • Incident investigation: Determines if accidents, incidents, and near misses are reported and recorded

Some key procedures for an effective OHS audit include:

  • Document assessment: Reviewing safety plans, training reports, incident reports, health and safety policies, and emergency plans
  • Interviews: Interviewing key personnel and random employees
  • Workplace observation: Walking around the workplace to observe compliance
  1. Sustainability AuditsEvaluate your company’s environmental footprint and sustainability practices. We assess your organization’s sustainability initiatives and provide recommendations for reducing waste, energy consumption, and carbon emissions.
    1. GRI:A widely recognized framework for sustainability reporting that provides guidelines for reporting ESG information.
    2. SASB Standards:Industry-specific sustainability accounting standards that are designed for investors.
    3. TCFD:The Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures, which guides companies on disclosing climate-related financial risks.
    4. CDP:The Carbon Disclosure Project, which provides an environmental disclosure system for companies to report on climate change, water security, and deforestation.
    5. CSRD:A CSRD audit is an independent review of a company’s sustainability report to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the information disclosed. The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) is a piece of EU legislation that requires companies to undergo these audits to help investors identify sustainable businesses.
    6. SBTi:The Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) provides a service to validate targets set by companies and financial institutions. The SBTi also offers guidance and tools to help companies set science-based targets for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
    7. GHG: A greenhouse gas (GHG) audit is an assessment of an organization’s GHG emissions inventory by an independent third party.
    8. GHG Emissions Reduction Audit:Emission reduction refers to minimization of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated by an individual, organization, or country. These gases include carbon dioxide (CO2), methane, nitrous oxide, and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).
      • It Includes a calculation of GHG emissions reductions in addition to energy and utility cost savings. Focuses on major equipment and all fossil-fuel combustion equipment.
      • An exhaustive inventory of all heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment may not be required.
      • Includes evaluation of the following GHG emissions reduction strategies: Reduce or eliminate on-site fossil-fuel combustion through electrification and system efficiency improvements.
      • Reduce or eliminate fugitive emissions from refrigerants. Install on-site renewable energy sources.
      • Results in a long-term plan, with consideration of phased implementation of measures to align with capital planning.
    9. LCA:LCA stands for Life Cycle Assessment, which is a method for evaluating the environmental impact of a product, material, or process over its entire life cycle. It’s also known as a “cradle-to-grave” analysis.

LCA is used by scientists, policymakers, and business leaders to: Set sustainability goals, Help with process and product design, Help with marketing, Help with third-party verification or certification, and Quantify key environmental impacts.

  1. Carbon Footprint Evaluation: Calculate and reduce your company’s carbon footprint through sustainable practices and energy-efficient technologies. A scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions audit is a way to categorize and quantify a company’s emissions from different sources:

Scope 1: Emissions from sources the company owns or controls directly, such as burning fuel in vehicles

Scope 2: Emissions from the production of energy the company purchases and uses, such as electricity for buildings

Scope 3: Emissions from sources the company is indirectly responsible for, such as buying, using, and disposing of products from suppliers. Scope 3 emissions are often the largest contributor to a company’s carbon footprint, accounting for more than 70% in many cases. To calculate a company’s total carbon footprint, it’s important to consider all three scopes.

Businesses can use the results of a scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions audit to identify areas for improvement, such as reducing waste, streamlining procurement, or looking for efficiency opportunities. This can help companies reduce their environmental impact and stay ahead of legislative changes.

  1. Waste Management & Resource Efficiency: Evaluate your waste management systems and suggest improvements for reducing waste and enhancing recycling and resource conservation.

  3. Green Certifications: We assist in obtaining certifications like ISO 14001 (Environmental Management Systems), ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety), or LEED for buildings, demonstrating your commitment to sustainability.

  1. Energy Audit (ISO 50002:2014):An energy audit is a systematic analysis of energy consumption and use in a building, system, organization, or site. ISO 50001 serves as the basis for the introduction of an energy management system (EnMS). The central component of the standard is an energy planning process that defines energy targets and action plans and records all energy flows in detail.

The goal of an energy audit is to identify energy flows and potential for energy efficiency improvements.

Energy audits can range from a quick walk-through to a comprehensive analysis. The scope of the audit depends on the needs of the client and the consultant providing the services. An energy audit may cover include:

  • Electrical system
  • Electrical substations
  • Transformer loading practices
  • Power factor management
  • Unit operations
  • Process steps
  • Areas of material and energy use
  • Sources of waste generation

  1. Industrial Hygiene Audit:An industrial hygiene audit is a comprehensive assessment of a workplace to identify potential health and safety hazards. The audit evaluates the effectiveness of a company’s safety and health program, and helps employers: Create a safer working environment, Ensure compliance with regulations, and Develop proactive risk management strategies.

Audits are typically conducted by experienced safety professionals and can involve: Reviewing existing safety protocols, Conducting workplace inspections, and Collecting samples for laboratory analysis.

The four basic principles of industrial hygiene to help you prevent job-related illnesses. They are, 1) Anticipation, 2) Recognition, 3) Evaluation and 4) Control of workplace health hazards.
