COG Gas (Coke Oven Gas)

Coke Oven Gas (COG) is a combustible by-product of producing coke from coal.

How it’s made:

  • Coal is heated in a reducing atmosphere, releasing COG while leaving carbon-rich coke.

Uses:

  • Industrial fuel and methanol feedstock.
  • Can be used in gas turbines for power generation.

Safety:

  • Contains carbon monoxide; proper ventilation and monitoring are critical.
  • Use non-sparking tools to reduce ignition risks.
