Gas Cylinders Rules, 2016 – Labour Law Overview

The Gas Cylinders Rules, 2016 govern the handling, storage, and use of gas cylinders in India. These rules ensure safety by setting precautions to prevent accidents, restrictions on personnel handling gas cylinders, and strict requirements for labeling and identification.

Precautions

  • Storage: Gas cylinders must be stored upright and securely chained to prevent falling. They should never be stored in battery rooms or near oil storage areas.
  • Identification: Cylinders must be painted to indicate the type of gas they contain and labelled with the gas name and the name and address of the person who filled it.
  • Safety: Smoking, open flames, and other hazardous activities are strictly prohibited near gas cylinders.
  • Personnel: Children and intoxicated individuals are prohibited from working with gas cylinders. Only a competent person should oversee operations.

Restrictions

  • Filling: Cylinders must not be filled with a gas other than the one they are designed to contain.
  • Repairing: Seamless gas cylinders and welded or brazed cylinders must only be repaired by a qualified person.
  • Transport: Cylinders should be loaded, unloaded, and transported with utmost care to prevent accidents.
