Defensive Driving: The Smith System

The Smith System provides defensive driving techniques to reduce accidents and enhance road safety.

The Five Keys of the Smith System:

  1. Aim High in Steering: Look at least 15 seconds ahead to anticipate hazards.
  2. Get the Big Picture: Continuously scan your surroundings.
  3. Keep Your Eyes Moving: Avoid fixating on a single point.
  4. Leave Yourself an Out: Maintain a safe following distance.
  5. Make Sure They See You: Use signals, headlights, and eye contact.

Application in Different Driving Situations:

  • City Driving: Handling intersections, traffic flow, and pedestrians.
  • Highway Driving: Maintaining distance, safe overtaking, and managing fatigue.
  • Adverse Weather: Adjusting for rain, snow, and fog.
